M&G defends Zapiro's cartoon
JOHANNESBURG - The Mail and Guardian newspaper on Friday defended satirist Zapiro's latest drawing which depicts President Jacob Zuma drawn in the image of a penis.
The image, which was published in this week’s edition of the newspaper, shows Zuma looking in the mirror with a heading that says, “The Spear to be raised at Social Cohesion Summit.”
Mail and Guardian editor Nic Dawes said they did not intend to insult Zuma and did not compare the image to the controversial Spear.
“I think it was an attempt to make a pretty rude comment about the president. It is quite a different image from the Spear and it is intended to provoke.”
Meanwhile, African National Congress Secretary General Gwede Mantashe described the cartoon as “outright racist”.
“That cartoon is both racist and sexist in the sense that it captures [Zapiro]’s obsession with male genitals and his love for ridicule.”
